HOUSTON – San Jacinto College recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening to allow community members to tour the new North Campus Welcome Center, which began operations at the start of the Spring semester.
The new Welcome Center houses numerous student services and is part of a $295 million capital improvement bond referendum approved by voters in 2008 that funds new facilities and renovations at all three SJC campuses.
The facility provides a convenient “one-stop shop” for student services such as testing and assessment, educational planning and counseling, career and employment assistance, First Year Experience programs, disability services, enrollment services, business office, and financial aid assistance. In addition, the campus president, vice president of learning, dean of student development, and dean of enrollment services are housed at the Welcome Center.
With a centralized location for important services, students can now complete their admission application, apply for financial aid, take placement tests, meet with educational planners, receive career guidance, participate in first year experience programs, and make payments all in one convenient location.
The construction cost of the 38,863-square-feet facility was $8.23 million. “This is an important step to helping our students succeed,” commented SJC Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer. “It’s projects like this that will enable San Jacinto College to continue to serve our community’s educational and workforce training needs. This building is a vital tool to help us better assist and prepare our students.”
North Campus students do indeed have positive comments about the new Welcome Center. “I love the spacious waiting areas, and how clean the Welcome Center is. It’s very comfortable and inviting,” commented Amanda Fraga. “The Welcome Center is a great addition to the College. It has an open concept with an easy flowing layout,” said Janice Betancourt.
